Natural Dog Chew Alternatives to Rawhide

When it comes to selecting the natural dog chew alternatives treats for your dog, it’s crucial to consider both the safety and the nutritional benefits of the products.

Given the overwhelming number of options available in pet shops and online and the well-meaning, but sometimes conflicting advice from other dog owners, it’s important to base your choices on reliable information and your dog’s specific needs.

Rawhide Treats: The Concerns

Rawhide is not a by-product of the meat industry, it is a by-product of the leather industry.

I have known a few dogs that like a chew on a pair of shoes, but you would feed your dog a leather boot for dinner, would you?

Rawhide treats, which are made from the inner layer of cow or horse hides, are widely available but come with several concerns:

  • Chemical Processing: Rawhide treats undergo a cleaning, bleaching, and preservation process that involves chemicals. These chemicals can be harmful to dogs, especially if ingested in large amounts.
  • Potential Hazards: Rawhide can pose a choking risk and may cause intestinal blockages. Some dogs might chew off large chunks, which can be dangerous if swallowed.
  • Not a Natural Food Source: Rawhide is a by-product of the leather industry, not the meat industry, meaning it is not a natural or particularly nutritious treat for dogs.

These are not a suitable chew to provide to your dog and please steer clear of these.  It is best to look at natural dog chew alternatives for your dog instead.

I had always wondered why my first own dog, Tye, was never interested in rawhide he must have known something I didn’t know at the time!

Natural Dog Chew Alternatives to Rawhide

There is a vast range of natural chews now available, to ensure your dog remains healthy and happy, consider the following natural chew alternatives from a few select ones I have listed below:

  1. Yak Bars:

    • Description: Made from yak milk, these bars are long-lasting and can keep dogs busy.
    • Benefits: High in protein and free from artificial additives.  Great for puppies to have especially to help them love their crate – Check out my blog here on How to Teach Your Puppy to Love Their Crate
    • Caution: Some dogs may demolish these quickly, so not always great on your pocket as they do cost a bit more.
  2.  Antlers:

    • Description: Naturally shed deer or elk antlers.
    • Benefits: Long-lasting and rich in minerals.
    • Caution: Not suitable for hard chewers as they can crack teeth. Limit chewing time and supervise closely with all breeds.
  3. Beef Scalp, Bulls Pizzles, Cows Ears, Beef Plate:

    • Description: Tough, dried meat.
    • Benefits: Great for harder chewers as they takes longer to consume.
  4.  Fish Twists:

    • Description: Twisted fish skin treats.
    • Benefits: High in omega-3 fatty acids, good for skin and coat health. Suitable for puppies and gentle chewers.

  5. Chicken Feet, Duck Feet, Rabbit Ears, Pigs Inner Ear, Lamb Braids :

    • Description: Smaller feet and ear chews for smaller breeds.
    • Benefits: A quicker snack for a larger breed, but smaller breeds will be satisfied with a smaller chew.

The Benefits of Chewing

Providing your dog with safe and natural chews has multiple benefits:

  • Mental Stimulation: Chewing provides mental engagement, preventing boredom and destructive behavior.
  • Dental Health: Natural chews help in maintaining dental hygiene by reducing plaque and tartar build-up.  Your dog’s kibble doesn’t do this, it was a marketing ploy by a dog food manufacture who said this, but it isn’t true.
  • Stress Relief: Chewing releases endorphins, which help in calming and relaxing your dog.
  • Natural Behaviour: It satisfies your dog’s instinctual need to chew, promoting overall well-being and also saving your furniture and belongings being chewed.

Here are a few places I like to buy my chews from online

There are also places locally including pet shops and markets which I will be doing a blog on next week :
