My Track and Trail Classes in Coventry give dogs of all breeds and ages the chance to use their natural scenting instincts with purpose. Through small-group outdoor sessions, I teach you how to follow your dog, read their body language, and build a focused working partnership using kind, force-free methods.

Track and trail canine training teaches a dog to follow a prepared human scent trail across real outdoor terrain. The dog works in a suitable harness and line, using their nose to locate and follow the route while their handler learns how to support them without taking over.
This is not obedience work disguised as scent training. Your dog is encouraged to use an ability they already possess, while you learn how to recognise when they are confidently following scent, checking the environment or searching for the trail again.
During each class, the tracks are laid as part of the learning experience, allowing you to see how the process works from start to finish. Beginners start with clear, achievable trails, and as you and your dog develop your skills, the tracks naturally become longer, more challenging, and more varied.
The result is an activity that challenges the brain, builds confidence and creates a very different kind of partnership between dog and handler.
My introduction classes are designed for complete beginners. You do not need previous tracking experience, specialist knowledge or an exceptionally obedient dog.
Track and trail may be particularly valuable when:
Reactive, anxious or easily overwhelmed dogs may also benefit from having a clear task to focus on. Suitability depends on the individual dog and the class environment, so I am happy to discuss your needs before you book.

Following a trail requires concentration, scent discrimination and continual decision-making. It gives your dog a meaningful mental challenge rather than simply adding more physical exercise.
A well-managed tracking session can help a dog feel fulfilled because they have been allowed to use their nose in a structured, purposeful way.
Some owners feel as though they are constantly battling their dog’s nose. The lead tightens, attention disappears and every scent becomes more important than the person holding the lead.
Tracking changes the context. Instead of treating scent drive as a problem, I help you turn it into a cooperative activity. Your dog learns when and how to use their nose for a defined task, while you learn how to work with their natural motivation.
A clear scent trail can give a worried or uncertain dog something specific to do. Rather than attempting to process every sight, sound and movement around them, they can begin focusing on the task in front of them.
Tracking is not a replacement for an individual behaviour programme where one is needed, but it can provide a valuable outlet for suitable dogs.
Tracking teaches you to watch your dog closely. Small changes in head position, pace, breathing, posture and movement can tell you whether your dog is confidently following the trail or searching for it.
Learning to notice these signals can improve the way you understand your dog in other areas of daily life.
In many forms of training, the owner gives instructions and the dog follows. Tracking changes that relationship.
Your dog has access to scent information that you cannot perceive. You must learn to trust their nose, while they learn that you will support them without interrupting their work. That balance can create an extraordinary sense of partnership.
Tracking is not an activity with a fixed endpoint. Once your dog understands the foundations, you can work towards longer trails, older tracks, changing terrain and more complex scent challenges.
It can continue growing with you and your dog for years.
My four-week Introduction to Track & Trail course is designed for dogs and handlers starting from scratch.
During the course, your dog will begin following prepared trails while you learn the foundational skills needed to handle the line, work safely and read what your dog is communicating.
The course includes:
The confirmed course price is £144. Current dates, times and availability are displayed through my online appointment system.
Once you have completed the Introduction course, you can continue developing your skills through flexible drop-in sessions.
These sessions allow you to practise without committing to another weekly course. I prepare tracks that help returning teams progress through longer, older or more complex trails at a pace suited to their experience.
Each drop-in session lasts approximately two hours and costs £36.
Completion of an Introduction course is required before joining a drop-in session.
Choose an available Introduction course through my online booking system. The listing will show the current dates, session times and any practical information you need before attending.
At your first session, I will introduce the equipment, explain how the exercise works and guide you as your dog begins following a prepared scent trail.
There is no expectation that either of you will arrive knowing what to do. The course is designed to build the skill from the beginning.
I will help you identify the physical signals that show when your dog is working confidently, when they have moved away from the scent and when they need space to solve the problem.
This is one of the most important parts of tracking. Your role is not to steer your dog around the trail, but to understand and support their work.
Each session builds on the previous one. As your dog gains confidence, the trail can develop in distance, age and complexity.
The aim is steady, successful progression rather than rushing your dog into a challenge they are not ready to complete.
Every session is prepared to give both you and your dog a clear, supported learning experience.
During each class, you’ll learn how tracks are created before taking part in practical tracking exercises with your dog. Every exercise is designed to match the experience of the group, helping both you and your dog build confidence while developing your tracking skills over time.
I coach you throughout the session, helping you understand line handling, positioning, timing and your dog’s changing body language.
Group numbers are kept small so each dog receives meaningful time on the trail and every handler can receive direct feedback.
The exercises are not isolated activities. Each session contributes to a planned progression, helping you understand what you are working on and why it matters.
My methods are kind, reward-based and focused on welfare. I do not use aversive corrections or force dogs through the exercise.
This approach reflects the ethical, humane training principles promoted by the Pet Professional Guild.
I founded Carrie’s Canines & Friends in 2016 after my own experiences showed me how easily dog owners can be left feeling confused or judged.
My aim has always been to provide clear, supportive training that helps people understand their dogs rather than simply suppressing unwanted behaviour.
I am:
I have also supported work involving Dogs for Autism and have been mentioned on This Morning in connection with Peter and his autism assistance dog, Coco.
My approach to tracking reflects the same principles that guide my other training programmes. I look at the whole dog, work at a pace they can manage and coach the person at the other end of the lead with patience and without judgement.

Yes. Tracking draws on a natural canine ability and is not limited to traditional working breeds. Dogs of different breeds, sizes and ages can take part where the activity and class environment are suitable for them.
Some reactive or anxious dogs can benefit from structured scent work, but every dog is different. Please speak to me before booking so I can understand your dog’s needs and advise whether the group format is appropriate.

Tracking is an outdoor activity, so suitable clothing and footwear are important. Any changes affecting a scheduled session will be communicated directly to booked handlers.
No. Although it involves physical movement, the main value comes from mental focus, scent work, problem-solving and cooperation between dog and handler.
You can also find further information on the FAQs page.
Your dog already knows how to use their nose. My role is to help you turn that natural ability into a safe, focused and rewarding skill that you can enjoy together.
Through carefully prepared trails, small-group coaching and kind, structured progression, I will help you understand your dog in a completely different way. You may arrive wanting a new activity, but leave with a stronger partnership and a far clearer view of what your dog is capable of.
