How to Keep Your Dog Cool During a Summer Heatwave

It seemed a long time coming, but it is at last officially summer from tomorrow.

It’s coincided with a mini summer heatwave approaching next week.

This time of year, we do seem to get inundated with posts and blogs of how to keep your dog cool during a summer heatwave.

But it is important to keep our furry friends cool and comfortable, hence all the posts.

We were only a couple of weeks ago moaning about the wet and mud and now we are worried about it being too hot!

With temperatures on the rise, dogs can struggle to stay cool and safe.

Here are some essential tips to help your dog beat the heat and enjoy the summer safely.

Early Morning Walks are Essential

The best way to keep your dog cool is to adjust their walking schedule. Aim for early morning walks, preferably before the sun heats up. The temperatures are much cooler, and the pavements are less likely to burn your dog’s paws.

Skip the Afternoon Walk

With the hottest part of the day now around 4 pm, it’s wise to miss the afternoon walk entirely. Instead, opt for a late evening walk when the temperatures have dropped. This ensures your dog gets their exercise without the risk of overheating.

Choose Cool, Shady Routes

When walking your dog, avoid direct sunlight. Opt for shaded areas like woodlands which tend to be cooler. If you need to drive to get to these cooler spots, do so. This will protect your dog’s paws from hot pavements which can cause burns.

Limit Exercise for Short-Nosed Breeds

Short-nosed breeds, such as Pugs and Bulldogs, are particularly susceptible to heat. Keep their walks very short and only during the coolest parts of the day. Engage them in indoor activities to ensure they still get the mental stimulation they need.

Provide Enrichment Activities

Mental stimulation can be just as tiring as physical exercise. Engage your dog with training sessions or scent games, which can be more exhausting for them than a long walk. Provide enrichment toys like stuffed frozen Kongs or snuffle mats to keep them entertained and cool.

Cool Mats and Wet Towels

Cool mats are a great way for dogs to self-regulate their body temperature. If you don’t have a cool mat, you can soak a towel in cold water and lay it on the floor for your dog to lie on. Avoid placing the wet towel directly on your dog as this can trap heat instead of cooling them down.

Dog Ice Pops and Frozen Treats

Making dog-friendly ice pops using bone broth or stock can be a refreshing treat for your dog. These frozen goodies not only keep them cool but also provide enrichment. Freeze Kongs with their favourite fillings to give them a cold, tasty snack.  Make sure as well they access to penalty of fresh water at all times.

Paddling Pools and Indoor Cooling

A small paddling pool filled with cool water can be a fun and effective way for your dog to stay cool. Dogs sweat through their paws, so standing in cold water helps lower their body temperature. Additionally, keep your dog indoors where it’s cooler and close the curtains to block out the heat.

Watch for Signs of Heatstroke

Heatstroke can be fatal, so it’s important to recognize the signs. Look for red, purple, or blue gums, staggering, collapsing, high body temperature, and a racing heart. If you notice any of these symptoms, contact your vet immediately.

Never Leave Your Dog in the Car

Cars can become dangerously hot very quickly, acting like ovens. Never leave your dog in a parked car, even for a short period. It’s best to leave them at home where they are safe and cool.
