Some Solutions to help with Elimination Disorders in Cats
If you find you are having a problem with marking behaviour from your cat and they are no longer using their litter tray correctly, this may stem from the cat being anxious (it can sometimes happen when you go away and use a cat sitter or have a friend to stay to take care of your cat).
It can be a quite complex behaviour and vets see a high percentage of elimination problems from cats spraying, urinating and defecating in the wrong place. It may stem from your cat having a urine infection, they may no longer like the litter you are using or they may not like the location of the litter tray. Below I have listed a few solutions that you can try to help fix the problem, but do keep in mind it may be a good idea to speak to your vet about the issue.
- Change the type of litter you are using
- Change the location of the litter tray – they may think it is too exposed or too far away from the rest of the house
- Change the flooring underneath the litter tray – cats do not like the plastic mat that are sometimes put under the litter trays as they move too easily
- Change the litter more frequently
- Preferably have at least one litter tray per cat in your household
- If you have more than one cat, put the litter trays in different rooms for each cat
- Change the type of litter tray – some like the enclosed boxes, some prefer the open style litter trays
